A very long time ago the Creator gave the Haudenosaunee people a beautiful doll made of corn husk. This doll had a spirit and traveled from village to village. Traveling from village to village everyone told her how beautiful she was. It was not long, before she developed an ego about her beauty. She thought she was better than everyone else. One day the Creator called for her to visit Him. On the way she passed a lake and saw her reflection in the water, and she admired herself. She thought, “I really am beautiful.” When she met the Creator she was told to “stop thinking that she was better than everyone else, or he will give her a terrible punishment.” The doll was worried. On returning to the villages, she was again constantly told how beautiful she was. She forgot the Creator’s warning. She again was called to go to the Creator. On the way again she passed the pool of water and admired her beauty. On meeting the Creator for the second time, the Creator said, “you ignored my warning. I therefore am taking your face.” On her way back to the village she was very sad, she didn’t see her face in the pool of water.
This is a lesson story from the Haudenosaunee, that one should never think they are better than anyone else or a punishment can come from the Creator. Such a beautiful legend. One that many people could benefit from. The Creator is watching everyone.
