REFINE YOUR VISION…J. Pincott, Winnegrad

EGOCENTRIC BIAS is deeply ingrained within most of us and is a foundation for “IMPRESSIONABLE ILLUSION.” It causes us to misread others; it undermines empathy and tolerance. To put our ego in its place we have to recognize that our own point of view is not the only one. We should see the wisdom in others’ points of view, and learn from them. When we care a little less about our self-image, EGOCENTRIC BIAS, we open the door to interacting more genuinely.

We do not have to contaminate SOCIAL INTERACTIONS with our own state of mind. By self-distancing ourselves we gain traction as an effective means of self-regulation. This gives us the mental space to react to a bad experience less emotionally. The most resilient people give themselves mental latitude, space to see their setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. They believe FAILURE IS AN EVENT, NOT AN IDENTITY. Emotions are not an accurate reflection of reality. External self-awareness allows us to be more in sync with others. It makes us more effective leaders because we have more empathy.

A life of meaning requires the thoughtful exercise of one’s passions and skills. Whatever you find at the center of your being, you don’t want rigidity. New information that conflicts with your existing knowledge is harder to take in if one is inflexible. CURIOSITY SHOULD PREVAIL OVER MASTERY.

Mark Twain said, “The two most important days in life are the day you are born and the day you discover the reason why.” In PURPOSE you find FULFILLMENT in the PROCESS. It’s not the triumphant outcome but the nitty-gritty steps. A life of meaning requires the thoughtful exercise of your passions and skills. The rewards can be rich; WHEN NOTHING IS SURE, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

REPLACE THE EGOCENTRIC BIAS WITH FULFILLMENT.

  1. Wow, wow, wow! I think this might be one of my favorites. So true and so hard to do. I especially loved your remark about self-distancing our reactions. Kind of like counting to 10 before speaking. Really good stuff here. Thanks! 💜

  2. Thank you ~ by BEING in the moment with another, I have an opportunity to remind myself (“it’s not about YOU”)…it’s about COMPASSION and SERVICE…how can I be of help…in this I choose, through evidence, that this is MY PURPOSE… By being present and sincerely listening, I am of service.

As the EGO can be quite formidable, I am finding that contending with it in every breath, if very FULFILLING, and requires DAILY PRACTICE, setting my an intention first thing in the morning.
