Wow, I just read this statement from Ernest Hemingway; “It takes two years to learn to speak and sixty years to learn to keep quiet.” How true is that? So true. Many of us speak all the time, it is a time to demonstrate one’s ego. As soon as something is obtained in the brain the tongue is fluttering it out of the mouth. That goes on for sixty or more years. Yes, that starts as a two year old and then the conceit, vanity, pride, self-love, arrogance, self-centeredness hangs on for years to come. There is a way to prevent such a disastrous life.

The Haudenosaunee believe that one has two ears and one mouth so that they should listen twice as much as they speak. Now how true is that? When one listens they learn much more than when they speak. Listening to other view points or perspectives than your own can possibly change your perspective and end up giving more knowledge to you. Gaining more knowledge puts one on the road toward wisdom.

Yes, take those two years to speak, then swallow your ego and grow for sixty years into the knowledgeable individual the Creator wants you to be. Along the sixty year path share your knowledge with others and slowly gain wisdom. Let us make Hemingway’s statement inaccurate.
