GOOD—NO MORE!…Winnegrad

In Tokyo the word “GOOD” was banned for 30 days in the lower grades. The teachers were not allowed to say “GOOD,” “GOOD” job, “GOOD” drawing, “GOOD” morning. Instead the teachers described what they saw. Such as; “you used blue today,” or “you tied your shoes faster,” or “you helped him up.”

Within two weeks, the young students changed. They did not need approval from the teachers. Their confidence was very obvious. THE STUDENTS FELT ALIVE, NOT JUST EXISTING, OR BEING OBEDIENT. Psychologists measured the dopamine levels from students that got praise and the levels just spiked and was short lived. But when the effort is noticed NOT JUDGED the dopamine builds for a long term. Dopamine released in the brain plays a crucial role in the brains system to pursue rewards.

That is the root of adult anxiety; years of waiting for approval, “GOOD” JOB. The brain is always waiting for someone to grade it. It has been found that removing praise, you give back presence. So, what is necessary is; DESCRIBE INSTEAD OF APPROVING. You will notice whether you are in school, meetings, with friends and EVEN SELF-TALK, you will feel the calm return.

“GOOD?”

TAKE CARE, STAY WELL, STAY HEALTHY. HAVE FAITH. THANK YOU.
