SEEING WITH EYES OF WHOLENESS…J Kabat-Zinn, Winnegrad

Albert Einstein clearly articulates, the importance of SEEING WITH EYES OF WHOLENESS, in the following letter that he sent to a friend that had a loss in their life. This letter of Einstein’s captures so well the spirit of the mindfulness practice. Einstein’s letter;

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us “Universe.” He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest—-a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation, and a foundation for inner security.”

Einstein is reminding us to see wholeness as fundamental. We are not separate beings. Seeing ourselves as separate is a delusion and imprisoning. When we neglect the perspective of wholeness and connectedness, we only see one side of being alive. We must eliminate this delusion of consciousness, it is a form of self-imprisonment. The true value of a human is determined by how much liberation he gets from himself.

The remedy for this dilemma of delusion and tyranny of the “small self,” we must intentionally cultivate compassion for all life and an appreciation of ourselves and of all living creatures. This will liberate us from the prison of our own thought habits. We are at times special and then at times nothing special. THIS IS TRULY HEALING.
