HOW WE DECIDE…J. Lehrer, Winnegrad

We always need to be aware of how we think. Sometimes we need to reason through our options and analyze the possibilities. This is using our prefrontal cortex, the newer part of our brain. Sometimes we need to listen to our emotions, that is our limbic system, the oldest part of the brain. We want to make decisions based on judgement built of time. But much of what we “think” is really driven by our emotions. Reason without emotion is important, but the mind contains two “avenues.” The older one which is immediate and the newer one that takes seconds longer than the older brain.

Disappointment is educational. The most effective way to get better is to focus on your mistakes. Expertise is simply the wisdom that emerges from mistakes. Mistakes should not be worrisome, they should be used as a lesson to learn from. ALWAYS PRAISE A STUDENT FOR TRYING HARD WHETHER THEY GET THE RIGHT ANSWER OR NOT. Making mistakes is necessary for the process of learning.

When you overthink, when you already know something, you cut yourself off from your knowledge, your wisdom. Do not be a prisoner of your preconceptions. People in good moods are better at solving hard problems, it has been found to be 20% better. Be sure one’s emotional issues are at rest. It is important to know that once you have made the fundamental mistakes, you can then trust your emotions. BE A STUDENT OF ERROR, LEARN FROM WHAT WENT WRONG. THE BRAIN ALWAYS LEARNS FROM ITS MISTAKES. Mistakes are steps in the ladder of success.

TAKE CARE, STAY WELL, ALWAYS STAY HEALTHY. HAVE FAITH. THANK YOU.
