EXPLORATION OR EXPLOITATION… A.Gopnik, T.Griffiths, Winnegrad

As we grow older, we gain more knowledge. That’s mostly an advantage. But it can also lead us to ignore evidence that contradicts what we already know. That’s TUNNEL VISION or a fixed mindset. With knowledge, we can become too obstinate in our ways to change.

EXPLOITATION is to avail oneself of, take advantage of, to profit by. When we are faced with a new problem we usually EXPLOIT the knowledge that we have acquired so far. We try to quickly find a pretty good solution that is close to the solutions that we already have. That’s known as EXPLOITATION.

EXPLORATION is to investigate, to research, to try something new which may lead us to to a more unusual idea, a less obvious solution, a new piece of knowledge. Using a EXPLORATION method may also mean we spend lots of time considering crazy possibilities that will not work. This is a learning process, people as such have a growth mindset.

At work today “time is of the essence.” We must make the effort to resolve the tension between EXPLORATION and EXPLOITATION. There has to be an understanding, an acceptance to allow one to go down the path of EXPLORATION. Knowing that the results could not be fruitful.

A CREATIVE solution to a problem comes only from EXPLORATION. As Steve Jobs had said; mixing two unrelated pieces of knowledge together will bring about CREATIVITY.

EXPLORE YOUR KNOWLEDGE, DO NOT FIND COMFORT IN YOUR SOLUTION, EXPLORE YOUR KNOWLEDGE, DO NOT LOOK FOR A QUICK RESOLUTION, EXPLORE YOUR KNOWLEDGE BE ORIGINAL.

  1. My dear friend. This message skillfully masks one other issue. Many times people who appear strong and knowledgeable, mask their insecurities with inflexible positions on subjects they are most comfortable with. It is important to open not only your eyes, but your mind to challenges in business, but also in life. Thank you Ron
