“TUMBLE-WEED”…Winnegrad

To be a person that possesses HUMILTY is a basic gift that one should have with them all their life. To be HUMBLE, in life, is to be unassuming, free from PRIDE, modest and to always increase their HUMILITY. One that has HUMILITY is one that is VULNERABLE, and is always open to all experiences with the HEART and SOUL, as mentioned in previous posts.

Being on the Onondaga Reservation while I went to Syracuse University, I learned early the lesson of having HUMILITY. It was my first and one of many, many lessons. The Onondaga people will always make sure that no one shows off PRIDE and is always GRATEFUL for any “talent” or “skill” they may have been given. When an Onondaga Native is given a complement for “possessing” a “skill” they always GIVE THANKS TO THE CREATOR for that gift. They always demonstrate GRATITUDE, HUMBLENESS.

One day a non-native, from Syracuse University lacrosse team, played a lacrosse game on the reservation. He was a good player in school and he was not HUMBLE about his abilities. He spoke highly of his skills to the Native American players. He was the only non-native playing. So the Natives constantly kept knocking him down, even when he did not have the ball. Most of the time he was ROLLING around on the ground. Half way through the game they started to call him “TUMBLE-WEED.” To this day, 60 years later he is called “TUMBLE-WEED.” As said it was his first lesson of HUMILITY, GRATITUDE, HUMBLENESS.

Whatever “SKILL,” GIFT you “possess” GIVE THANKS TO THE CREATOR. The Onondaga Natives believe if you do not GIVE THANKS TO THE CREATOR, HE CAN TAKE THE GIFT AWAY.

SO DO NOT BE A “TUMBLE-WEED” SHOW YOUR GRATITUDE AND HUMBLENESS.

PLEASE TAKE CARE, ALWAYS STAY WELL AND STAY HEALTHY.

  1. This message is most relevant to the younger generations who see boasting after a touchdown, a three point basket or a good shot on the line in tennis.
The excitement we posses when we accomplish a task, is more relevant and long lasting when we don’t flaunt that experience, but rather accept a compliment from another. As you point out though, even with recognition, a humble acceptance presents “ a class act”.
Thanks again Ron Winnegrad for being you

  2. I think everyone needs a lesson in how not to be a tumble-weed. Some may need many reminders! Being humble is a hard thing for which we should all strive. Thank you for the wonderful post and reminder about humility and gratitude. Your words touch me every week. 💜
