Before Jim Brown was a Hall of Fame player for the Cleveland Browns he played lacrosse for Syracuse University making the All-American team. I was a freshman at Syracuse and he was a senior. One day there was an inter-squad game. The freshmen against the varsity. There was a free ball rolling on the ground. My teammate and I were running for the free ball and so was Jim Brown. I yelled “I got the man” my teammate yelled “I got the ball”. I threw my block on Jim Brown so my teammate could get the ball. After throwing my block, I opened my eyes while I was lying on the ground and saw my teammate lying on the ground next to me. Looking up I saw Jim Brown standing over the two of us, with the ball in his lacrosse stick. Jim said, shaking his head, “DON’T DO THAT AGAIN.”

I did try again throughout the season, in inter-squad games. With having similar end results, with Jim just shaking his head with a puzzled look on his face.  But each time it improved my skills. There are several lessons here. I will mention one that comes to mind, DON’T LISTEN TO DON’T. One must try again and again, FAILURE IS A LEARNING LESSON. So I was really learning. When a DON’T comes your way, take it as a challenge to perfect your skills. When the DON’T is used with you, take it as a challenge as long as the DON’T does not encroach on other people’s basic rights or on other people’s liberties.
