GIVE YOURSELF AS A GIFT…D. Brooks, Winnegrad

Our culture does a good job of ignoring the uniqueness and depth of each person. Pollsters see demographic groups, data counts people as if they are apples, capitalism reduces people to economic self-interest and consumerism treats people concerned merely with pleasure. PERSONALISM is a philosophy built on the uniqueness and depth of each person. Their pursuit of high or noble principles.

There is a depth and complexity to each human personality that gives them unique dignity. Dignity does not depend on what you do or how successful you are or whether your school calls you gifted. With PERSONALISM you see each other to their full depth. Going through your busy day it is easy to establish a I-It relationship with the security guard in your building or the person down the hall. We reduce people to their superficial function.

With PERSONALISM it should be a I-Thou encounter. Try to get to know their stories. THE REASON FOR LIFE IS TO GIVE YOURSELF AS A GIFT TO PEOPLE. To be able to GIVE YOURSELF AS A GIFT TO PEOPLE is to be available to all. Life is busy, being available for people takes time and a deliberate purpose.

PERSONALISM demands that we change the way we structure our institutions. A company that treats people as units to simply maximize shareholder return is showing contempt for its own workers. Schools that treat students as brains are not preparing them to lead whole lives. This requires a moral revolution.

EMBRACE PERSONALISM, GIVE YOURSELF AS A GIFT. THE REWARDS WILL BE GRATIFYING.

  1. First I propose that Rom Winnegrad run for President of the United States. Second is to praise your kind, sharing, informative guidance.
Last to not least I borrow a comment we’ve all heard before, “ to know you, is to love you”, and so many people do both. Sincerely, Art

  3. I fully appreciate this notion of giving of ourselves to others. It has become clear that this is a primary purpose/dharma of mine. To be fully present with another. To listen with intention, not on how my time with another serves me, but how I can be THERE for them. Being there with a spirit of love and kindness, I realize my full purpose ~ synergizing our energies to to make the universe a better place ~ BEING THE CHANGE, I WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD ~ a beautiful thing.
